The Smurfs is a 2011 American 3D live-action/computer-animated comedy film loosely based on the comics series of the same name created by the Belgian comics artist Peyo. It was directed by Raja Gosnell and stars Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofía Vergara, and Hank Azaria, with the voices of Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry, George Lopez, Anton Yelchin, Fred Armisen, and Alan Cumming. It is the first live-action/animated film produced by Sony Pictures Animation, and the first of two live-action/animated Smurfs feature films. The film tells the story of the Smurfs as they get lost in New York, and try to find a way to get back home before Gargamel catches them.

Gargamel: Must... have... SMURFS!
(jumps through the portal)
  • To promote the film, Neil Patrick Harris and his animated cohorts hosted Nickelodeon's "Smurf Tastic Saturday Morning" on July 16, 2011 during episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants (1999).
  • The Smurfs originally started out as a comic book, by Peyo. In homage of this, a "Smurfs" comic book plays a pivotal role in the film. The book that the Smurfs find at Mr. Wong's Magical Emporium, "L'Histoire des Schtroumpfs," includes artwork by Peyo from his stories, "The Smurf's Apprentice", "The Fake Smurf", and "The Hundredth Smurf."
  • The filmmakers made the decision (after numerous tests) to depict the Smurfs at 7½ inches: any larger, they would no longer appear as the lovable creatures as they are known for; any smaller, it would be difficult for them to relate to real-world objects and people.
  • According to the Sony Pictures Imageworks animators, the Smurfs in the film can run up to 10 feet per second and have a vertical leap of 4-12 inches.
  • Quentin Tarantino was approached to voice Brainy Smurf, but turned it down.
