Mars Needs Moms is a 2011 American animated science fiction comedy film co-written and directed by Simon Wells, produced by ImageMovers Digital and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Based on the Berkeley Breathed book of the same title, the film was animated through the process of performance capture and stars Seth Green, Dan Fogler, Elisabeth Harnois, Mindy Sterling, and Joan Cusack. It was the second and final film produced by ImageMovers Digital before the studio was shut down and re-absorbed into ImageMovers resulting in the company leaving the animation business for good. It tells the story of a nine-year-old boy named Milo who sets out to save his mother on Mars after she is abducted by Martians.

TV Announcer: NASA scientists are excited over recent findings by the Mars Rover of fossilized organic compounds on the surface that indicate at some time in the past there may have been life on the red planet.
  • Milo's (Seth Green) mom (Joan Cusack) is wearing a Carolina Panthers jersey with the name Smith and the number 21 on it when she is taken to Mars. As of the 2011 season no player with the last name Smith has worn 21 in the team's history. (Most recently the number has been worn by defensive back Brandon Hogan.) Because of this, Smith may be Milo's family's last name, as fan apparel is often customized in this manner.
  • The 02:31 Mars Needs Moms "trailer 1" available on the Internet was made before Seth Green's voice for Milo's lines was replaced with Seth Dusky's voice and can give viewers a sense of how the film would sound had Seth Green's voice been retained. Seth Dusky's voice is used in the 01:32 "trailer 2" and the 01:38 "trailer 3".
  • At around 54 minutes, Gribble breathlessly exclaims "My Sharona" when he sees Ki in the underworld after he and Milo escape from the citadel. This is probably a reference to the 1979 gold record song "My Sharona" by The Knack.
  • The film had an opening weekend gross of only $6.9 million, making it the twelfth worst opening ever for a film playing in more than 3000 theaters, and one of the lowest openings for a major 3D release. Due to its high budget of $150 million, the film is considered a massive box office bomb. Its commercial failure contributed to Disney's cancellation of the planned remake of Yellow Submarine (1968), which was intended to be made with the same motion capture technology used in "Mars Needs Moms".
  • According to the Los Angeles Times, Seth Green spent six weeks outfitted in a special sensor-equipped performance-capture suit while also simultaneously performing his lines in the role of Milo. During the post-production process, filmmakers noticed that Green was able to physically embody a 9-year-old - imitating the movements and behaviors of a child - but his voice sounded too mature for the character. Therefore his voice was removed from the final print and replaced with that of 11-year-old actor Seth Robert Dusky.
