The Brave Little Toaster is a 1987 American animated musical fantasy comedy-drama film directed by Jerry Rees. It is based on the 1980 novella of the same name by Thomas M. Disch. The film stars Deanna Oliver, Timothy E. Day, Jon Lovitz, Tim Stack, and Thurl Ravenscroft, with Wayne Kaatz, Colette Savage, Phil Hartman, Joe Ranft, and Jim Jackman in supporting roles. It is set in a world where domestic appliances and other consumer electronics come to life, pretending to be lifeless in the presence of humans. The story focuses on five anthropomorphic household appliances—a toaster, gooseneck lamp, electric blanket, radio and vacuum cleaner—who go on a quest to search for their owner.

Lampy: So... uh... what's this thing with you and the Blanket?
Toaster: What thing?
Lampy: You know. All of a sudden, you're being so darned NICE to him all of a sudden.
Toaster: Oh, that. I was just thinking, and I got this feeling I should be nicer to him for a change, you know? And now I feel better.
Lampy: Wow, that's weird.
Toaster: What's weird about it?
Lampy: I don't know. I mean, you were never this nice to him before, and all of a sudden now you're nice to him all the time, and I don't know. I'm, uh, I'm just trying to understand, trying to figure out, what it all means.
Toaster: Well, it's kind of hard to describe. It's like being next to a new loaf of bread.
(Lampy looks puzzled)
Toaster: Hmmm. It's, um, let's see... it's like a warm, toasty feeling inside.
(Lampy scratches his head)
Toaster: It's like a glow...
Lampy: A glow!
Toaster: Yeah.
Lampy: I think I know what you're talking about! It's like the feeling I get when I think about the Master.
  • The film was a smash hit at the Sundance Film Festival, but failed to find a distributor. It was aired on the Disney Channel in 1987, then had appeared in the Park City Film Festival in 1988, before finally having a brief theatrical release at New York's Film Forum in May 1989, but still failed to find a distributor. It was actually shown in parts at various theaters as a serial from week to week, and in 1991, it was distributed on video. In October 2003, it finally had a DVD release alongside its two sequels.
  • Rob (The Master) and his mother's apartment number is A113, which was the number of John Lasseter's room in college. A113 also shows up in Toy Story (1995) and A Bug's Life (1998), which he directed.
  • The main cast is The Groundling Group, comprised of Jon Lovitz, Timothy Stack, Timothy E. Day, Deanna Oliver, Thurl Ravenscroft, and 'Phil Hartman'.
  • Two weeks after recording their dialogue, Jon Lovitz and 'Phil Hartman' joined "Saturday Night" (1975).
  • Loudmouth (the Radio) directs the group "North by northwest" then cautions them to "watch out for low-flying aircraft". This is a reference to the Alfred Hitchcock film North by Northwest (1959) in which Cary Grant is chased by a low-flying biplane.
