• Whether by coincidence or by design, two of James Cameron's unused ideas for his Terminator movies ended up being used in this film. For The Terminator (1984), Cameron originally wanted Skynet to send two Terminators back to 1984: one being a cyborg, and the other a liquid, shape-shifting android. However, due to the limitations in special effects, the idea for the shape-shifter was not used until Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). For T2, Cameron briefly considered the idea of two T-800s in Arnold Schwarzenegger's likeness battling each other, one being the 'good' Terminator, the other one evil; this was eventually changed to one T-800 and a T-1000. In Terminator Genisys, both a cyborg (the T-800) and a liquid android (T-1000) are sent back to the altered timeline of 1984, and there are two T-800s in Arnold's likeness battling each other (even though the evil one is technically not played by Arnold but a body double).
• There are a few subtle hints at the beginning of the film that indicate that the prologue already takes place in a different timeline (i.e. it is not the exact same future as seen in The Terminator (1984)): Kyle Reese is saved by John Connor from a Terminator in a sewer, whereas in The Terminator (1984), he states that John freed him from a factory where he was enslaved by Skynet. Also, Kyle still has the photograph of Sarah Connor before he is about to time travel. In The Terminator (1984) it is established that this photo had burned long before he did that.
• J.K. Simmons was stated to have improvised many of his lines. His description of a rocket to the T-800 ("Blows a door clean off. You know, for people who can't do that themselves.") even earns a stare of surprise from Arnold Schwarzenegger.
• Jason Clarke played a character named Eddie Furlong in Australian drama All Saints.
• Arnold Schwarzenegger stated in the 2002 documentary Dirty Harry: The Original that Clint Eastwood was an inspiration of his since he had seen the first Dirty Harry film after he wrapped production of Hercules in New York. The setting of Terminator Genisys in San Francisco is the same city which was featured in all of the Dirty Harry film series. Also Schwarzenegger wore the Gargoyles sunglasses in the first film - Eastwood was the first actor 2 have featured the same sunglasses in the final 2 Dirty Harry films (Sudden Impact and The Dead Pool).
