Riding in Cars with Boys is a 2001 American biographical film based on the autobiography of the same name by Beverly Donofrio, about a woman who overcame difficulties, including being a teen mother, and who later earned a master's degree. The movie's narrative spans the years 1961 to 1986. It stars Drew Barrymore, Steve Zahn, Brittany Murphy, and James Woods. It was the last feature film directed by Penny Marshall, who directed television productions thereafter. Although the film is co-produced by Donofrio, many of its details differ from the book.

Tina Barr: Are we invited to this party?
Beverly: They're Fay's friends.
Fay: They're not. My parents are friends with their parents.
Beverly: What's important is that Sky Barrister will be there.
Fay: Sky has had his hands in everything you've got. And he has a ton of your poems. And does he call you once? No. Bev, you are truly a great person. But someone as conceited as Sky won't see that. Because all he can see is himself. You know I'm right.
Tina Barr: It's true, Bev.
Beverly: (pause)
(she observes Fay's dress)
Beverly: Let me wear that dress.
Fay: What?
Beverly: Fay, if I even look half as beautiful as you in that dresss... Sky will have to notice me. You can wear my dress.
Tina Barr: No.
Fay: (she observes Bev's dress but is reluctant) I... No, Bev. It won't fit.
Beverly: Fay, you gotta let me wear that dress.
Fay: Why?
Beverly: Because I love you.
(Fay ponders)
Beverly: Please, please, please.
Fay: All right.
  • In her autobiography: My Mother Was Nuts, Penny Marshall explained she quit directing movies after this because her films were about heart, and after 9/11, studios did more action and violent movies and weren't interested in films 'with heart' anymore.
  • The wedding scene was shot over two days, which meant Brittany Murphy had to cry the entire time. The first take was used in the film.
  • The real life Beverly D'Onofrio has a master's degree in creative writing. Drew Barrymore, who portrays D'Onofrio in the film, is a high school dropout.
  • Beverly D'Onofrio:  guests at Beverly's wedding, sitting directly behind Drew Barrymore. When Faye says, "I just wanted to say how beautiful Bev looks tonight," Barrymore turns to smile at the real D'Onofrio.
  • Norman Reedus was considered for the role of Ray Hasek.
