Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is a 2006 American fantasy swashbuckler film directed by Gore Verbinski, written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), it is the second installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. Set one year after the events of The Curse of the Black Pearl, the film recounts Captain Jack Sparrow owing a debt to Davy Jones (Bill Nighy), the ghastly captain of the Flying Dutchman, and being marked for death and pursued by the Kraken. Meanwhile, the wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) is interrupted by Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander), who wants Turner to acquire Jack's magic compass in a bid to find the Dead Man's Chest.

Lord Cutler Beckett: The East India Trading Company has need of your services. We wish for you to act as our agent in a business transaction with our mutual friend Captain Sparrow.
Will Turner: More acquaintance than friend. How do you know him?
Lord Cutler Beckett: We've had dealings in the past. And we've each left out mark on each other.
Will Turner: What mark did he leave on you?
Lord Cutler Beckett: By your efforts, Jack Sparrow was set free. I would like you to go to him and recover a certain property in his position.
Will Turner: Recover? At the point of a sword?
Lord Cutler Beckett: Bargain! You will offer what amounts to a full pardon. Jack will be free. A privateer in the employ of England.
Will Turner: Somehow I doubt Jack will consider employment the same as being free.
Lord Cutler Beckett: Freedom! Jack Sparrow is a dying breed. The world is shrinking. The blank edges of the map filled in. Jack must find his place in the new world or perish.
Jack Sparrow: (after searching the shattered jar of dirt for Davy Jones' heart) Where is it? Where is the thump-thump?
Jack Sparrow: Mr. Gibbs.
Gibbs: Captain.
Jack Sparrow: We have a need to travel upriver.
Gibbs: By "need," do you mean a trifling need? Fleeting? As in, say, a passing fancy?
Jack Sparrow: No, a resolute and unyielding need.
  • The highest-grossing movie of 2006.
  • At $135,634,554 domestically in its opening weekend, it was the motion picture to reach $100 million the fastest, accomplishing the feat in two days.
  • The scene when Jack Sparrow call the Flying Dutchman "fishmates" and sing to them "I got a jar of dirt" was actually unscripted and it was improved by Johnny Depp, mostly of the reactions of the rest of the character are real.
  • The Edinburgh Trader is the HMS Bounty from Mutiny on the Bounty (1962), which later sank during Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
  • While the script was being written, Keira Knightley suggested the scene between Jack and Elizabeth where Jack is handcuffed to the ship.
