Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is a 2011 American fantasy swashbuckler film, the fourth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series and a standalone sequel to At World's End (2007). It is the first film in the series not to be directed by Gore Verbinski, replaced by Rob Marshall. Jerry Bruckheimer again served as producer. In the film, which draws its plot loosely from the 1987 novel On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is joined by Angelica (Penélope Cruz) in his search for the Fountain of Youth, confronting the infamous pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane). The film was produced by Walt Disney Pictures and released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It was the first film in the series to be released in the Disney Digital 3-D and IMAX 3D formats.

  • Penélope Cruz was the only choice for the role of Angelica. She agreed to the role without reading the script.
  • Megan Fox was considered for the role of Syrena.
  • As in the previous "Pirates" movies, Barbossa's penchant for apples is glimpsed in this one as well - this time, he treats himself to an apple wedge at his captain's table aboard The Providence.
  • This was the first film to be released in the 4DX format in Mexico and in the Western Hemisphere, which is only available at select Cinépolis theaters. 4DX features strobe lights, tilting seats, blowing wind and fog and odor effects.
  • The outdoor entrance to the Fountain of Youth is the Waikapala'e Wet Cave on the north shore of Kauai. Analogous to the film's magical watery passage to The Fountain of Youth, the cave holds a real submerged (depending on water level) passage through which explorers can travel in order to reach an isolated chamber known as "The Blue Room." Some Hawaiians tell of an actual pirate treasure found hidden in "The Blue Room" by the original discoverers. The pirate treasure (if it ever existed) is gone, but the cave and chamber remain a natural treasure, still accessible to intrepid explorers.
