Zdeno Chára (born 18 March 1977) is a Slovak professional ice hockey defenceman for the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL). He previously played for the New York Islanders, Ottawa Senators, and Boston Bruins. He served as the Bruins' captain for all of his 14 seasons with the team, and won the Norris Trophy in 2009. Standing at 6 ft 9 in (2.06 m) tall, Chára is the tallest person ever to play in the NHL, earning him the nickname "Big Z". He is also the second European-born and raised captain to win the Stanley Cup (in 2011), and the first born and trained in a country within the Iron Curtain.
