V for Vendetta is a 2005 dystopian political action film directed by James McTeigue (in his feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by the Wachowskis. It is based on the 1988–89 DC Vertigo Comics limited series of the same title by Alan Moore, David Lloyd, and Tony Weare. The film, set in a future where a fascist totalitarian regime has subjugated the UK, centres on V (portrayed by Hugo Weaving), an anarchist and masked freedom fighter who attempts to ignite a revolution through elaborate terrorist acts, and on Evey Hammond (portrayed by Natalie Portman), a young woman caught up in V's mission. Stephen Rea portrays a detective leading a desperate quest to stop V.

V: (V interrupts the three policemen about to rape Evey, whips out a dagger, and quoting the sergeant from Macbeth Act I Scene 2) "The multiplying villainies of nature do swarm upon him

V: disdaining fortune/with his brandish'd steel, which smoked with bloody execution...?
  • The "scrambler device" Finch uses in his office is a popular type of pocket reading light, with a red bulb or filter added to make it look more high-tech.
  • The symbol of the Norsefire Party is one form of an ancient heraldic symbol called the "Croix de Lorraine". A similar symbol was adopted as the official symbol of General Charles de Gaulle's Free French Forces between 1940 and 1944. It was later used for various Gaullist political parties in France, notably the RPR (Rally for the Republic).
  • The song that plays on the jukebox in the scene where Evie tells V that she is leaving is "I Found A Reason" by Cat Power.
  • When the commandos capture Evey outside Dietrich's house, one commando is obviously V. If you look closely, you can see burnt flesh through the eye holes in the commando's mask for a split second.
  • The song "Long Black Train" foreshadows on Inspector Finch's alarm in the morning of November 5th, when the film ultimately ends.
