Bobby Seale: I'm the head of the Black Panthers, Sondra. When the hell am I not gonna be in trouble? Travel bag!
Sondra: You're gonna be in a lot more of it if you stand up and say, "Fry the pigs."
Bobby Seale: If they attack. You're takin' it out of context.
Sondra: So will every white person in America. Cops won't give a shit about context, and you don't have enough protection in Chicago.
Bobby Seale: There's no place to be right now but in it.
Sondra: But "fry the pigs"?
Bobby Seale: If they attack...
Sondra: Dr. King...
Bobby Seale: --Is dead. He has a dream? Now he has a fuckin' bullet in his head. Martin's dead, Malcolm's dead, Medgar's dead, Bobby's dead, Jesus is dead. They tried it peacefully. We gonna try something else.
  • In regards to the film's timely subject matter in 2020, Aaron Sorkin described the film as being more about modern day than the 1960's. He explained that, "The script didn't change to mirror the times. The times changed to mirror the script."
  • Amblin Partners initially shut the film down during pre-production due to budget concerns, but Paramount Pictures joined the project with Cross Creek to co-produce & co-finance the film.
  • Daphne O'Connor (Caitlin FitzGerald) tells Jerry Rubin (Jeremy Strong) this joke: "You know why they only eat one egg for breakfast in France? Because in France, one egg is 'un oeuf' [enough]." This joke is repeated verbatim from a season 1 episode of The West Wing (1999) titled "Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics," in which Margaret (NiCole Robinson) tells it to Leo (John Spencer). Both the West Wing episode and this movie were written by Aaron Sorkin, who is well-known for recycling many of his own best lines (popularly known as "Sorkinisms") from project to project.
  • When Steven Spielberg was attached to direct, he was planning on meeting with Heath Ledger to discuss the role of Tom Hayden. Ledger passed away the day before he was scheduled to meet with Spielberg. Spielberg also wanted Will Smith to play Bobby Seale.
  • In a January 2021 interview on the National Public Radio program "Here & Now," Frank Langella (Judge Hoffman) said that it was fun for him to play a character so completely devoid of positive characteristics: "He's reprehensible throughout. He doesn't have a single redeeming quality. He is a pawn of the government, not very bright, and I felt--with Aaron [Sorkin]'s wonderful guidance, I felt free to make him as much of a monster as he reportedly was.... It was a joy to play a man who had no conscience and knew from the moment he walked in that he was going to convict them." Langella also said that his only previous role that he felt was comparable to Judge Hoffman was Skeletor in the 1987 live-action adaptation of the children's cartoon Masters of the Universe (1987) (also starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man). Although that movie was a critical and commercial flop on its release, Langella has often expressed affection for it over the years, saying that he took the role because his then-four-year-old son loved the He-Man toys and cartoons.
