Season of the Witch is a 2011 American fantasy adventure film starring Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman and directed by Dominic Sena with extensive uncredited reshoots by Brett Ratner. Cage and Perlman star as Teutonic Knights, who return from the Crusades to find their fatherland ruined by the Black Death. Two church elders accuse a girl (Claire Foy) of being a witch responsible for the destruction; they command the two knights to transport the girl to a monastery so the monks can lift her curse from the land. The film draws inspiration from the 1957 film The Seventh Seal. It reunited Sena and Cage who had previously worked together on Gone in 60 Seconds.

  • Test screenings reportedly did not impress Lionsgate executives and the studio decided to push back the originally planned March 2010 release date. The movie underwent reshoots in September 2010 in Shreveport, Louisiana.
  • Though Claire Foy's character is revealed to be named Anna at the end of the film, she is listed simply as "The Girl" in the credits.
  • Wormwood, the name of the forest where blood is shed in the main characters' journey, is also the name of a destructive entity found in the Bible. This entity, described as a star, is called Wormwood (from a Greek word also translated as Bitterness) and appears to cause a plague-like (or poisoning) effect. From the Book of Revelation 8:10-11 we read "The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water--the name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter."
