  • This film is a samurai remake of the western comedy Blazing Saddles (1974). Historically, many samurai films were remade as westerns. These included Yojimbo (1961), starring Toshirô Mifune, which was remade as A Fistful of Dollars (1964). The Shogun's name, Toshiro Tifune, is a reference to Mifune, and Hank's cry of "Yo! Jimbo!" is a reference to the film.
  • The line used by the Shogun that "it's good to be the Shogun" was a nod to King Louis XVI's line "it's good to be the king" in Mel Brooks' film History Of The World Part I, and Louis the XVI was also portrayed by Brooks.
  • This is the 7th Nickelodeon animated movie to be produced in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, after The Wild Thornberrys Movie (2002), Rugrats Go Wild (2003), Rango (2011), The Adventures of Tintin (2011), Wonder Park (2019), and PAW Patrol: The Movie (2021).
  • In 2015, during the film's original production cycle, then 5-year old singer Joy Jerkins from America's Got Talent was cast Emiko. In 2019, after the script was rewritten and a new animation studio picked up the film, her recordings were tossed away and the role was recast with Kylie Kuioka. Similarly, writer Sandra Tsing Loh was cast as Little Mama, but she ended up being recast by Cathy Shim.
  • Samuel L. Jackson's infamous swear word is replaced by "mother father cocker spaniel"
