Nymphomaniac (stylized onscreen and in advertising as NYMPHMANIAC) is a 2013 two-part drama art film written and directed by Lars von Trier. The film stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård, Stacy Martin, Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater, Connie Nielsen, Jamie Bell, Uma Thurman, and Willem Dafoe. The film was originally supposed to be only one complete entry; but, because of its four-hour length, von Trier made the decision to split the project into two separate films. Nymphomaniac was an international co-production of Denmark, Belgium, France, and Germany.

Synopsis by Jason Buchanan

A brutalized young woman recalls her many sexual exploits to the kindly bachelor who nurses her back to health in this sexually charged drama from acclaimed director Lars von Trier. When Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård) finds Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) clinging to life in a darkened alley, he brings her back to his apartment, and begins tending to her wounds. Meanwhile, comfortable in the company of the benevolent stranger, Joe finds her thoughts drifting back to her youth, and her dramatic sexual awakening. A self-professed nymphomaniac, Joe's vividly erotic stories gradually reveal her to be an intensely sexual creature whose carnal appetite knows no limits. Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, Udo Kier, Connie Nielsen, and Shia LaBeouf co-star in a film featuring Stacy Martin as a young Joe.

Joe: It's actually the souls of the trees we're seeing in the winter. In summer everything is green and idyllic but in the winter, the branches and the trunks all stand out. Just look at how crooked they all are. The branches have to carry all the leaves to the sunlight. That's one long struggle for survival.
  • While the film features unsimulated sex, exposed genitals and penetration were digital compositions of pornographic actors onto the bodies of the film's actors.
  • The number of chapter headings both in this film and Nymphomaniac: Vol. II (2013) that begin with "The" also reflects the Fibonacci sequence numbers that are constantly entwined with Joe's life: Five ("The Compleat Angler," "The Little Organ School," "The Eastern and the Western Church (The Silent Duck)," "The Mirror" and "The Gun") and three (""Jerôme," "Mrs. H" and "Delirium").
  • Nymphomaniac: Vol. I (2013) is the second film featuring Uma Thurman to be cut into two films due to length issues. The first was Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003) and Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004).
  • Liam Hemsworth turned down the part of Jerôme.
  • According to Stellan Skarsgård, the "chocolate sweets" portion of the first chapter is based on an anecdote told by a female friend of Lars von Trier about how she and a friend dared each other to have sex with people on a train for a bag of candy.
