In an interview with newnownext.com, Helberg said that he researched what life might have been like for a closeted gay man of the era by reading about the life of Broadway composer Cole Porter, a gay man who married a woman. Helberg said, "Cole Porter also had lovers, and was also married. [McMoon] might have been Cole Porter before he knew. It was not accepted, and there were secret bars he would go to."
