Khumbanyiwa was born at Cobbe Barracks Hospital in Zomba, Malawi's former capital. He has four siblings. His father is Major Stewart Khumbanyiwa, a retired soldier, and his mother Victoria (née Manda), a retired primary school teacher.

Upon completion at Army Sec School in Blantyre, Malawi, he was voted 'The Most Popular Student,' by fellow students. An accolade that made him feel like he's won some prestigious award. 2. Besides English, he speaks Chewa, also known as Nyanja, and some Swahili, both languages are of the Bantu language family.
