- Inspired by the director's identical road trip and fateful brush with a woman who called herself Crystal Fairy.
- Most of the dialogue was improvised by the actors or fed to them by the director just before a take.
- When walking home after a late night, the director was once asked by a drag queen prostitute for a bite of his apple. He claims he declined her request.
- Gaby Hoffmann read 2012 Doomsday literature to inform her character.
- Michael Cera lived with the Silva family in Chile for several months to prepare for his role.
