Contagion is a 2011 American medical disaster thriller film directed by Steven Soderbergh. Its ensemble cast includes Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Elliott Gould, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Bryan Cranston, Jennifer Ehle, Sanaa Lathan, and Gwyneth Paltrow. The plot concerns the spread of a highly contagious virus transmitted by respiratory droplets and fomites, attempts by medical researchers and public health officials to identify and contain the disease, the loss of social order as the virus turns into a worldwide pandemic, and the introduction of a vaccine to halt its spread. To follow several interacting plot lines, the film makes use of the multi-narrative "hyperlink cinema" style, popularized in several of Soderbergh's films. The film was inspired by real-life outbreaks such as the 2002–2004 SARS outbreak and the 2009 flu pandemic.

Dr. Ellis Cheever: Someone doesn't have to weaponize the bird flu.The birds are doing that.
  • Jennifer Connelly was considered to play Beth Emhoff.
  • This is the first film that Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon and Jude Law have worked together in since The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999). However, Law doesn't have any scenes with either, and Damon and Paltrow barely share the screen together for a minute.
  • Consultant Dr. Ian Lipkin - professor of epidemiology at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health - said the virus in the film is one he created based on some traits of the Nipah virus from Malaysia in the late 1990s which spread from pigs to farmers.
  • To promote this film, Warner Bros. Pictures Canada built two giant Petri dishes treated with bacteria and fungi and set them in a Toronto storefront window. Over several days, the bacteria and fungi specimens grew to spell out the name of the film and form biohazard symbols.
  • The Russian title of the film ("Zarazhenie") contains nine letters, like the English one, and the poster of the film also mentions nine cities' names with one letter highlighted and the highlighted letters form the name of the film. They are, from top to bottom: kaZan, atlAnta, san fRancisco, chicAgo, pariZH (Paris), gEneva, loNdon, tokIo (Tokyo), pErm - Z-A-R-A-ZH-E-N-I-E. Kazan and Perm are Russian cities.
