Dame Celia Elizabeth Johnson, DBE (18 December 1908 – 26 April 1982) was an English actress, whose career included stage, television and film known for her roles in the films In Which We Serve (1942), This Happy Breed (1944), Brief Encounter (1945) and The Captain's Paradise (1953). For Brief Encounter, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. A six-time BAFTA Award nominee, she won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969).

  • Her father was a physician to the Duke and Duchess of York, who later became King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
  • Stage actress who appeared in a handful of UK films. She is best remembered for her screen performance in Noël Coward's and David Lean's Brief Encounter (1945), opposite Trevor Howard. This film wasn't released in the United States until 1946, and her subsequent nomination for an Academy Award for the Best Actress in a Leading Role did not occur until 1947.
  • After Diana Wynyard passed away, she replaced her and appeared in "The Master Builder" with Michael Redgrave and Maggie Smith as part of the new National Theatre Company in 1964. She and Smith would later appear together in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969).
