American Gods is an American television series based on the novel of the same name, written by Neil Gaiman and originally published in 2001. The television series was developed by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green for the premium cable network Starz. Fuller and Green are showrunners for the series and co-wrote the first episode. Gaiman serves as an executive producer along with Fuller, Green, Craig Cegielski, Stefanie Berk, and Thom Beers. The first episode premiered on the Starz network and through their streaming application on April 30, 2017.

Premise The series focuses on Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), a man serving three years in prison. With only days remaining in his sentence, Shadow is given an unexpected early release after his beloved wife Laura (Emily Browning) dies in an accident. On his way home for her funeral, he meets a strange man named Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane), who appears to be nothing but a con artist, and accepts to be his bodyguard; however, he soon finds himself a part of a large-scale conflict between greater beings, as Wednesday, in truth the god Odin, makes his way across America to gather all the old gods (who have now incorporated themselves into American life) and confront the New Gods, led by Mr. World (Crispin Glover) and growing stronger each day.

  • Ian McShane's second Neil Gaiman adaptation, his first was as Mr. Bobinsky in Coraline (2009).
  • Despite appearing in the opening credits as a main cast member, Crispin Glover only appears in two scenes in the whole first season.
  • Orlando Jones frequently makes "Gillovny" references in his Twitter account, regarding his partners Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny (in "Evolution") and their old perfect partnership in "The X Files."
  • When Ian McShane's character presents himself to Shadow as Mr. Wednesday, he says "today is my day". In Norwegian, Wednesday (onsdag), is derived from the old norse word óðinsdagr, and literally means Odin's day.
  • There are many nuances in this storyline for the first season. The neon lights in the posterior title of the series, all the cats, and a number 55 on his motel door. All of these are underlined with death.
