Synopsis by

As a young boy, Abraham Lincoln watched his mother Nancy (Robin McLeavy) suffer an agonizing death following a midnight encounter with malevolent bloodsucker Jack Barts (Martin Csokas). Nine years later, a vengeful Lincoln (played as an adult by Benjamin Walker) attempts to vanquish Barts and has his first terrifying encounter with the creatures of the night. Fortunately for the future of the nation, the would-be assassin is saved by determined vampire hunter Henry Sturgess (Dominic Cooper) at the last possible moment, and he lives on to perfect his vampire-slaying skills under his rescuer. Flash forward to 1837, as Lincoln arrives in Springfield, IL, and quickly lands a job as a shopkeeper under Joshua Speed (Jimmi Simpson), while also dividing his personal time between studying law and slaughtering vampires. Shortly after falling under the spell of beautiful Mary Todd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Lincoln has a belated reunion with his childhood friend Will Johnson (Anthony Mackie), who reinvigorates his passion to fight for freedom. But a war is coming, and immortal plantation owner Adam (Rufus Sewell) is determined to use it as a means of gaining the upper hand against mankind. Years later, as the 16th president of the United States, Lincoln is joined by his old friends in a last-ditch effort to save not just the Union, but the very future of humanity.

Mary Todd Lincoln: It's called a dance. If we were meant to sit down, they would've call it something else.
Abraham Lincoln: (smiling) Yes, I suppose they would have.
  • Although both are credited to the same author Seth Grahame-Smith, the book and movie sharing the title "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" are very different. Adam and Vadoma do not appear in the book - Grahame-Smith has explained that they were created for the movie because fantasy-action tradition demands an "archnemesis". In the book Henry was born in the 1500s and Abe recognizes him as a vampire when he first sees him. Vampiric twists are given to many well-known trivial anecdotes from Abe's biography, as well as additional Civil War battles such as Bull Run and Antietam. There are tangential subplots involving historical figures such as Edgar Allan Poe, William Henry Seward, General George B. McClellan, and John Wilkes Booth. (The movie's presence of Harriet Tubman, who was not in the book, may attempt to compensate for this loss.) Mary Todd Lincoln never learns about vampires. Vampires are able to kill other vampires, and there are many "vamp-on-vamp" battles whose absence book fans consider to be one of the film's largest shortcomings. There is also a surprising twist at the end.
  • Joaquin Phoenix was the first choice for the role of Henry Sturgess, but turned it down.
  • Shipped to the cinema with codename "Bloody Honest".
  • Robin McLeavy was considered to play Lincoln's wife Mary Todd, and was later cast as Lincoln's mother Nancy Hanks.
  • Trent Reznor was approached about scoring and playing a minor part in the film, but the news leaked before the final decision and Reznor voted to pass on the project as the surprise element of his participation had already been lost.
