X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a 2009 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics fictional character Wolverine. It is the fourth installment of the X-Men film series, the first installment of the Wolverine trilogy within the series, and a spin-off prequel to X-Men (2000) and X2: X-Men United (2003). The film was directed by Gavin Hood, written by David Benioff and Skip Woods, and produced by Hugh Jackman, who stars as the titular character, alongside Liev Schreiber, Danny Huston, Dominic Monaghan, and Ryan Reynolds. The film's plot details Wolverine's childhood as James Howlett, his time with Major William Stryker's Team X, the bonding of Wolverine's skeleton with the indestructible metal adamantium during the Weapon X program and his relationship with his half-brother Victor Creed.

William Stryker: We're going to make you indestructible - but first, we're gonna have to destroy you. You remember what we were looking for in Africa?
Logan: I remember.
William Stryker: Well, I found it. It helped us to create a metal compound so strong, that you'll be able to withstand virtually anything. It's called adamantium. I can't put Victor down myself, Logan. To kill him, you'll have to embrace the other side, become the animal.
Logan: Let's do this.
William Stryker: Oh, I almost forgot...
(hold up Logan's dog tags)
Logan: I want new ones.
William Stryker: What do you want them to say?
Logan: Wolverine.
  • Bryan Singer (who directed the X-Men (2000)_ and X2 (2003)), Brett Ratner (who directed X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)), Len Wiseman, Alexandre Aja, and Zack Snyder all expressed interest in directing the film before Gavin Hood was hired.
  • Brian Cox was interested in reprising his role as William Stryker from X2 (2003), using the digital skin-grafting VFX used in the last film on Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. The filmmakers thought it would be easier and cheaper to cast a younger actor instead and hired Danny Huston.
  • Liev Schreiber had studied to be a fight choreographer, and wanted to be a dancer like Hugh Jackman, so he enjoyed developing and filming the Logan-Creed fights.
  • Ryan Reynolds (as Deadpool) and Wesley Snipes (in the Blade movies) are the only two actors with roles in Marvel Comics film adaptations to have not gone through an audition prior to signing.
  • When Deadpool first accesses Scott Summer's Optic Blast power, the skin around his eyes burns in a diamond pattern. Deadpool's mask in the comics has a diamond pattern of a contrasting color around the eyes.
