Jamie mentions the movie "Back to the Future" several times. This movie includes several direct or inverted allusions to that movie. For example, in "Back to the Future", Marty tries to get his future parents together, while in this movie, Jamie tries to keep her future parents apart. Also like Marty, Jamie needs the help of the younger version of the genius who built the time machine to help her fix it and get her back to the future.
Jamie, the lead character, is named after actress "Jamie Lee Curtis"
Teen Pam and her snobby friends dress up as various characters that actress Molly Ringwald portrayed, and they call themselves, "The Mollys". This is an obvious nod to the 1989 film "Heathers".
Despite criticisms that this film is identical to The Final Girls, they have completely different plots. Totally Killer is about a teen who uses a time machine to go back in time to stop her mother's murder by unmasking the killer. The Final Girls is about a group of friends who get sucked into an 80s set horror film starring one of their mothers.
