- Peter Capaldi (Micawber) and Ben Whishaw (Uriah Heep) previously appeared together in 'Paddington' and its sequel. Darren Boyd (Murdstone) also voiced Mr. Brown in an animated adaptation of Paddington Bear.
- In the book, Ham dies while rescuing people from the shipwreck. He was not specifically rescuing Steerforth, and Steerforth's death is not revealed. It is only shown that he drowned.
- In the Dickens novel, David and Dora marry and conceive a child, but Dora loses the child, takes ill and dies. For this film, it was changed to Dora breaking off their engagement.
- Morfydd Clark plays two characters in the film - Clara Copperfield (David's mother) and Dora Spenlow - the protagonist's love.
- In the book, Mr. Peggotty, Emily, the Micawber family and Mrs. Gummidge all emigrate to Australia. Mr. Micawber ends up as a magistrate there.
