Isabel Graysmark: I hope you can forgive me for keeping you. And for letting you go.
  • While filming Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander's romance on-screen went off-screen. Some of the films key scenes were shot in Port Chalmers just outside Dunedin. The bulk of the film is set at a Lighthouse at Cape Campbell in Marlborough, New Zealand. The cast and crew lived there for 5 and a half weeks.
  • In the novel, Tom is 28 years old and Isabel is 19 years old. Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander were 37 and 25 years old respectively when the film was shot.
  • Both lead actors, Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, previously played artificial-intelligence characters in Prometheus (2012) and Ex Machina (2015), respectively.
  • The book and the movie's plot are very similar to a screenplay of a film titled "The Rootcutter" (retitled A Tale of Two Humans years later) written by Joseph Nobile a decade before the book The Light Between Oceans was published. Nobile's script is about a couple living on a remote Irish island who had three stillborns and are about to give up hope when the husband finds a boat adrift with a crying baby and a dead adult. After bringing the baby home and debating whether to tell the authorities, they agree to raise the baby as their own with eventual tragic results. Nobile's film is in development.
  • Five people portrayed the character Lucy/Grace: twins Elliot Newbery and Evangeline Newbery as a baby; Georgie Gascoigne as a one-year-old; Florence Clery as a four-year-old and Caren Pistorius as an adult.
