The Gray Man is a 2022 American action thriller film directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, from a screenplay the latter co-wrote with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Mark Greaney. The film stars Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, Regé-Jean Page, Wagner Moura, Julia Butters, Dhanush (in his Hollywood debut), Alfre Woodard, and Billy Bob Thornton. Produced by the Russo brothers' company AGBO, it is the first film in a franchise based upon Greaney's Gray Man novels. The plot centers on CIA agent "Sierra Six" (portrayed by Gosling), who is on the run from sociopathic ex-CIA agent and mercenary Lloyd Hansen (Evans) upon discovering corrupt secrets about his superior.

  • The final battle of the film is filmed at the Château de Chantilly, north of Paris. This location was also used for the World War I first-person shooter video game Battlefield 1, for the map "Ballroom Blitz", even though the Château was never involved in any actual battles during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. The film does stage a battle sequence throughout the location that closely resembles a multiplayer match in Battlefield 1.
  • The film cast includes one Oscar winner: Billy Bob Thornton; and two Oscar nominees: Ryan Gosling and Alfre Woodard.

  • When Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans) is first on the call with Six (Ryan Gosling) he refers to Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton) as his "COS". In the CIA, this refers to a given operative's Chief of Station. While some Chiefs of Station are over geographic areas and typically work out of American embassies overseas, a Chief of Station can also be the executive over a particular program, so Fitzroy's station is the Sierra program. Carmichael (Regé-Jean Page) is the DO, which is the Deputy Director of Operations, also called the Clandestine Service, which manages literal spies in the field as well as paramilitary operations and liaisons with special operations assets in the military. The CIA also has a Deputy Director who is just under the Director, and Deputy Directors with specific portfolios for Science and Technology, Analysis (formerly called "Intelligence"), Digital Innovation, and Support.
  • Chris Evans and Alfre Woodard previously starred in Captain America: Civil War (2016).
