Synopsis by Jason Buchanan

Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman star as two terminally ill cancer patients who decide to break out of the hospital and live their last days to the fullest in director Rob Reiner's seriocomic road movie. Edward Cole (Nicholson) is a corporate billionaire who is currently sharing a hospital room with blue-collar mechanic Carter Chambers (Freeman). Though initially the pair seems to have nothing in common, conversation gradually reveals that both men have a long list of goals they wish to accomplish before they kick the bucket, and an unrealized desire to discover what kind of men they really are. But one can't accomplish such lofty objectives from the confines of a hospital bed, so now, in order to live their lives to the absolute fullest, Edward and Carter will have to make a break for it. With a checklist that includes playing the poker tables in Monte Carlo, consuming copious amounts of caviar, racing the fastest machines on four wheels, and much more, these two terminally ill men will do their best to fit a lifetime of experience into their last remaining days while forging an unlikely, but truly remarkable, friendship.

Carter Chambers: (in his letter to Edward) Dear Edward, I've gone back and forth the last few days trying to decide whether or not I should even write this. In the end, I realized I would regret it if I didn't, so here it goes. I know the last time we saw each other, we weren't exactly hitting the sweetest notes-certain wasn't the way I wanted the trip to end. I suppose I'm responsible and for that, I'm sorry. But in all honestly, if I had the chance, I'd do it again. Virginia said I left a stranger and came back a husband; I owe that to you. There's no way I can repay you for all you've done for me, so rather than try, I'm just going to ask you to do something else for me-find the joy in your life. You once said you're not everyone. Well, that's true-you're certainly not everyone, but everyone is everyone. My pastor always says our lives are streams flowing into the same river towards whatever heaven lies in the mist beyond the falls. Find the joy in your life, Edward. My dear friend, close your eyes and let the waters take you home.
  • Kopi Luwak is indeed the most expensive coffee in the world selling for between $120 and $600 USD per pound. Its production is very slow due to its 'animal stage': the beans come from coffee berries which have been eaten by and passed through the digestive tract of the Asian Palm Civet.
  • Clint Eastwood was offered the role of Edward.
  • Jack Nicholson shaved his head for the film. Morgan Freeman wore a bald cap.
  • In one of the scenes where Edward and Carter are playing gin, Carter wins very quickly, and Edward asks, "Are you the Devil?" Jack Nicholson played the Devil in The Witches of Eastwick (1987) and Morgan Freeman played God in Bruce Almighty (2003) and Evan Almighty (2007).
  • The clip of Jeopardy! that Carter is seen watching in the bathtub is not from an actual episode of the show, and was filmed specifically for this movie.
