Robert and Kris started seeing each other in late 1973, but began officially dating in 1974. In the beginning of their relationship, Robert kind of viewed her as a beautiful trophy-girlfriend, even telling his friends that she looked like a young Natalie Wood. However, they both fell madly in love. Despite their divorce later on, it seems like they both were the loves of each others lives. Kris even mentioned that she regretted divorcing Robert in her book. Their children even said in interviews that despite both parents moving on after the divorce, that their father never stopped loving their mother.

Kris married her first husband, lawyer Robert Kardashian (widely known for his early representation of O.J. Simpson) on July 8, 1978. They had four children: daughters Kourtney (born 1979), Kim (born 1980), Khloé (born 1984) and son Rob (born 1987). During this time, Kris became a homemaker. The couple divorced in March 1991 due to among other things her many affairs, just one month before Kris married her second husband. Kris and Robert continued to be close friends after the divorce, up through Robert's diagnosis with esophageal cancer and his death in 2003. In 2012, Kris confessed she had an affair with former soccer player and animator Todd Waterman during her marriage to Robert. She referred to Waterman as "Ryan" in her autobiography, but he revealed his identity.
