  • Ancient people imagined that beneath the ground, a gigantic Torterra dwelled.
  • The four Pokémon who officially take part in the underground Pokémon cage match arena are Blastoise, Gengar, Charizard, and Pikachu. All four Pokémon are playable in Pokkén Tournament, which has battles that function in the exact same way.
  • The filmmakers used real-life mime artists as reference for the Mr. Mime sequence.
  • May be unintentional, but one of the default names for Red in the original was "Jack". He's even dressed up like a Pokémon Trainer, and is talking about leaving town.
  • This film is loosely based on the Nintendo 3DS video game Detective Pikachu, which was released worldwide in March 2018.
  • Howard Clifford's wheelchair weighed more than 170 pounds.
  • Kathryn Newton's favorite color is pink. She was very excited when she learned that her character wears a pink trench coat.
  • In the PCL labs, when Tim and Lucy are investigating the torterra experiment, you can see the Macro Cosmos logo on the monitor, Macro Cosmos is the villainous organization featured in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield.
  • Unused Concept art by R.J. Palmer would've showed a battle between Gyarados and Charizard. Whilst these Pokémon are used in the movie, it isn't to the extent that we see in the image above. The Pokémon are battling it out in what appears to be the marketplace shown briefly in the film not long after Tim encounters Detective Pikachu. Gyarados stands menacingly tall and is surrounded by a surge of water. Charizard is equally large and breathes flame towards Gyarados whilst Tim and Pikachu stand helplessly in between them. The scene in the film occurs on a much smaller scale. The noticeable difference here is Charizard's size. In the concept art, he is huge and almost on par with Gyarados whilst in the film he is much smaller and is easily overpowered by Gyarados's water beam.
  • In the anime, the first female companion of Ash is Misty, who also carries a Psyduck. Thus, in both anime and film, the lead male and female characters have a Pikachu and a Psyduck respectively.
  • Diplo's favorite Pokémon is Mewtwo, though he also loves Mr. Mime.
  • Ikue Otani is a Japanese voice actor who has voiced Ash's Pikachu in the animated series, which is used all over the world.
  • Howard Clifford has an Eevee which he then evolves into a Flareon. He does this while lying to Tim and Pikachu. In some circles Flareon is known as a false prophet, foreshadowing Howard's deception.
  • Mewtwo usually remains motionless to conserve energy so it can unleash its full power in battle.
  • In 1996 the first video games in the Pokémon series were released in Japan. Pokémon Red Version and Pokémon Green Version were an overnight success.
  • An interesting twist happens in the Japanese dub, as Mewtwo's male voice is voiced by Koichi Yamadera, instead of Masachika Ichimura in the animated films. It should be noted that Yamadera originally voiced Mew, the Pokémon which Mewtwo is based to. Likewise, Eevee and his evolutions are voiced by Wakana Ningyo, rather than Aoi Yuuki, through she already voiced Lana's (Suiren) Eevee in Pokémon Sun & Moon. In the same way in the Latin American Spanish dub, Mewtwo's male voice is voiced by Idzi Dutkiewicz, rather than Enrique Mederos, as the latter passed away.
  • When asked why he did the movie, According to Ryan Reynolds: "I was excited to do a film that my kids would love. I don't do a lot of films that are not rated-R. For me, that's a big one."
  • A Charizard never turns its fiery breath on a weaker opponent. However, a Charizard given R is a different story...
  • Tim mentions a gangster film on TV is an "old detective movie." The clip being shown is actually "Angels With Filthy Souls", a movie-within-a-movie which was featured in the original Home Alone (1990).
  • According to the Pokédex when a Pikachu comes across something new, it blasts it with a jolt of electricity.
  • Pikachu keeps its tail raised to monitor its surroundings. If you yank its tail, it will try to bite you.
  • The "Pokémon Theme" (also known as "Gotta Catch 'Em All") was written in 1998 by John Loeffler and John Siegler. The vocalist on the recording is Jason Paige.
  • The deerstalker hat is a signature piece of Sherlock Holmes' wardrobe.
  • The first time where Jessica Gee George and Michelle Ruff do voice over-work in a live-action film.
