Peter Caine: (addressing his fellow officers after resigning) When I was a very young boy, my father came and told me that my mother had died. I ran to the pond to look for her reflection standing over me, but it wasn't there. And I learned to swim alone. As a cop, whenever I was in danger, I'd look for a reflection, and I'd always see one or all of you standing behind me. And that gave me the courage to go on. I'll be around. But if you ever need somebody, look for my reflection.

Peter Caine: (after watching Caine do something amazing) You have got to teach me how to do that.

Lo Si: Bloody marvelous!

(Original opening. Scene: 15 years before the present)
Narrator: The grandson of Kwai Chang Caine walks out of the past.
Young Peter Caine: But I want to fight.
Kwai Chang Caine: Yes. So did your great-grandfather when he was your age.
Narrator: He teaches his son wisdom at a Shaolin temple. An evil force destroyed that temple. Father and son each believed the other had perished.
(Jump to the present)
Narrator: Fifteen years later, they were reunited. Now Caine faced new challenges... and his son grew up.
Peter Caine: Look, I'm not my father. I don't do kung fu. I'm a cop. That's who I am. That's what I do.
Kwai Chang Caine: I am Caine. I will help you.

Peter Caine: (after Kwai Chang has started teaching a new student) What more can you teach him?
Kwai Chang Caine: Why.
Peter Caine: All right. Forget I asked.
Kwai Chang Caine: No. You misunderstand. In his rush to master the "how", the technique. He has brushed past, or forgotten the "why," the meaning.

(In the hospital, Peter and his father meet again after twenty years)
Peter Caine: I saw the tattoos on your forearms, the dragon and the tiger. Who else but a Shaolin priest could walk out of a burning building like he was taking a stroll through Central Park?
Kwai Chang Caine: Must be... very HOT in Central Park.
