The characters in the anime series released an actual 2-Disc album entitled 'Hokago Teatime'. which debuted at #1 in Japan. It's the first time fictional anime characters' music CD topped either the weekly album or single chart in Japan.
When the series was first announced the manga of which this show is based on released a special issue with the characters acknowledging they were going to become a series.
The school is modeled after real life school Toyosato Elementary School. Since the show's debut the school has become increasingly famous with fans making a pilgrimage to visit.
The pig nosed turtle named "Ton-Chan" was created for the anime. Ritsu's brother, Satoshi was mentioned in the manga but never shown.
The family names of the four main girls are named after former members of the disbanded band "P-Model". In addition, the instrument used by each of the four girls also matches with the instrument used by the corresponding P-Model member. Yui Hirasawa from Susumu Hirasawa (Guitar), Mio Akiyama from Katsuhiko Akiyama (Bass), Ritsu Tainaka from Sadatoshi Tainaka (Drum), and Tsumugi Kotobuki from Hikaru Kotobuki (Keyboard). In addition, there are other characters that have family names matching those from the band "the pillows". They include: Sawako Yamanaka from Sawao Yamanaka (lead vocal & rhythm guitar) & Nodoka Manabe from Yoshiaki Manabe (lead guitar).
