PG | 94 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy | 10 February 2012 (USA)

Sean Anderson partners with his mom's husband on a mission to find his grandfather, who is thought to be missing on a mythical island.

The 17-year-old Sean Anderson receives a coded signal and his stepfather Hank helps him to decipher the message. They find that Sean's grandfather Alexander Anderson has found the mysterious island in the Pacific described by Jules Verne and two other writers in their novels. The stubborn Sean wants to travel to the coordinates and Hank decides to buy the tickets and travel with the teenager to a small island nearby the location. They rent an old helicopter owned by the locals Gabato and his teenage daughter Kailani and the group heads to the unknown spot. Along their journey, they cross a hurricane and crash on the island. They find a beautiful and dangerous place, surrounded by forests, volcanoes with lava of gold and menacing life forms. They also meet the old Alexander and Hank discovers that the island is sinking. Now their only chance to survive is to find the legendary Nautilus.

Synopsis by Jason Buchanan

Intrepid young explorer Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) traces a mysterious distress signal to a remote island that isn't on any map, and he embarks on a daring rescue mission while encountering a vast array of mythological creatures in this follow-up to 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth. Joined by his new stepfather (Dwayne Johnson), an adventure-seeking helicopter pilot (Luis Guzman), and the pilot's headstrong daughter (Vanessa Hudgens), Sean navigates the crumbling stone corridors of Atlantis and comes face-to-face with bizarre life-forms while on a mission to track down his long-missing grandfather (Michael Caine). Later, as seismic shock waves threaten mass destruction, the group must race to escape the otherworldly paradise before the ocean swallows it up.

Sean: Told you it'd work.
Hank: You were right. I can't believe we made it.
Sean: It's Jules Verne, man. You gotta believe.
  • Brendan Fraser, who starred in the first film in this series Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008), also starred in The Mummy Returns (2001) opposite Dwayne Johnson, who here takes over the position of Sean's father-figure.
  • There is another Jules Verne novel entitled "The Golden Volcano", which - although is set in the Canadian Arctic during the gold rush - spews gold nuggets when it erupts. This is likely where the mountains of gold came from for this movie.
  • Sir Michael Caine in this movie searches for the home base of Captain Nemo, a character played by Caine in a previous adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1997).
  • Brendan Fraser, who starred in the first film, also starred in the "Mummy" movies, including The Mummy Returns. Dwayne Johnson, who takes over the adult male lead role with this film, played Mathayus the Scorpion King in "Mummy Returns" and the spin-off prequel, The Scorpion King.
  • Michael Caine searches for Captain Nemo's Nautilus submarine through the latter half of this movie - in the 1997 remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Michael Caine played Captain Nemo.
