I, Tonya

I, Tonya is a 2017 American biographical sports black comedy film directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Steven Rogers. It follows the life of figure skater Tonya Harding and her connection to the 1994 attack on her rival Nancy Kerrigan. The film states that it is based on "contradictory" and "true" interviews with Harding and her ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, suggesting they are unreliable narrators. It features darkly comedic interviews with the characters in mockumentary-style, set in the modern day, and breaks the fourth wall. Margot Robbie (who also co-produced) stars as Harding, Sebastian Stan as Gillooly, and Allison Janney as Harding's mother LaVona Golden. Julianne Nicholson, Caitlin Carver, Paul Walter Hauser, and Bobby Cannavale also star.

LaVona Golden: You fuck dumb. You don't marry dumb.
  • Allison Janney, who plays LaVona Golden, had seriously trained to become a figure skater throughout her childhood and adolescence. However, when she was seventeen and at a party that her parents were throwing, she accidentally walked into a sliding glass door and gravely injured her right leg. in 2014, during an interview on the National Public Radio program "Fresh Air," Janney told interviewer Terry Gross that the leg was at risk of being amputated, and "I lost like three-quarters of my blood. I lost an artery and cut tendon....I was in the hospital for like seven--seven, eight weeks. I missed my first year of college. You know, and after that, of course, I didn't really--I didn't skate for a very long time."
  • McKenna Grace previously collaborated with co-star, onscreen friend, and real life friend of Sebastian Stan, Chris Evans from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in Gifted (2017).
  • Nancy Kerrigan stated in interviews relating to her Dancing with the Stars (2005) appearance that she wouldn't be seeing the movie despite not knowing how much of it would feature her, saying "I already lived through that."
  • Writer Steven Rogers, a long-time friend of Allison Janney, wrote the role of LaVona Golden with Janney in mind. He'd written several roles for Janney in the past, but other actresses ended up getting those parts.
  • When Tonya Harding herself first saw the film, she particularly liked the "Suck my dick!" line. She told Margot Robbie that she wished she had actually said that in real life.
