August Rush is a 2007 American musical drama film directed by Kirsten Sheridan and produced by Richard Barton Lewis. The screenplay is by Nick Castle and James V. Hart, with a story by Paul Castro and Castle. It involves an 11-year-old musical prodigy living in an orphanage who runs away to New York City. He begins to unravel the mystery of who he is, all while his mother is searching for him and his father is searching for her. The many different sounds and rhythms he hears throughout his journey culminate in a major instrumental composition, which concludes the film ("August's Rhapsody").

Richard Jeffries: Why is it so important that you want him now? Lyla Novacek: I've ALWAYS wanted him! Lyla Novacek: [in tears] I've waited eleven years, two months, and fifteen days just to find out that he's alive! [Jeffries stares at Lyla] Lyla Novacek: [she chuckles a little] I've been counting.
  • (at around 1h 40 mins) When Louis is in the van passing Central Park, the banner he sees shows that the concert's pianist is Lionel Wigram, Executive Producer of the movie.
  • Evan's hurried and disorganized writing of sheet music closely parallels the working style of Gioachino Rossini, best known for "William Tell" and "The Thieving Magpie", who is known to have written pieces mere hours before they were to be performed.
  • August's unique style of playing guitar, which includes banging on the strings, was innovated by the artist Michael Hedges. Other artists have continued to develop his style. In the movie, August's first improvisation session on guitar is actually Hedge's song "Ritual Dance", played by guitarist Kaki King.
  • The story is based on the plot of Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. In addition to the main characters (August/Oliver, Wizard/Fagin, Arthur/The Artful Dodger) it also includes some of the more obscure characters from the book, such as Oliver's friend Dick from the workhouse/August's friend in the orphanage, Hope/Rose Maylie, Rev. James/Mr. Brownlow, and Lyla's Father/Monks.
  • Robin Williams' performance as "Wizard" was reportedly inspired by rock star Bono.
